Thursday UPDATE

"Two horror Franchises and a few blockbusters arrive."

"I decided to finish up my mainstream horror collection. The US release of the scream trilogy is great, it comes with two amazing in depth documentaries. Unfortunately the UK release of Scream 4 is a Bare bones release."

"The Chucky collection has all of them for the first time in one set. Just recently Chucky returned after the terrible Seed of Chucky. Curse of Chucky was pretty damn good, I would rank it as the 2nd best sequel next to 2. Great set, no new extras but most are ported over form the DVD releases."

"Two blockbusters of last year. Prisoners is one of the best films I have seen from last year, Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal give some of their best performances. Definitely worth a watch, I can see it being part of the Criterion collection in the future. World War Z was notably edited to a PG-13 rating when it hit cinemas, this took most of the blood and gore away from the film. Fortunately the extended cut has fixed that, World War Z is a solid zombie film and one of the best in my opinion since Romero's Land of the dead. There seems to be a lack of practical effects and the film is 80% CGI most of the time which really hits the film hard, still Brad Pitt was pretty good but it was over-hyped like many summer blockbusters"

"Before Raimi did Spider-man he did his own comic book character film which was called Darkman. Sadly it has disappeared from the public eye, but what a great film. The Evil Dead humour is featured here and there and Liam Neeson gives one of his better earlier performances. Conspiracy theory is a strange one, Mel Gibson plays a taxi driver who is obsessed about conspiracy theories, when he actually finds the truth he is in danger. A funny film, not your standard Mel Gibson film but still worth seeing."

Friday UPDATE

"Here is what arrived in the past week, some great releases."

"I don't think these films need explaining due to the popularity of them, Al Pacino at his finest. Almost finished my Pacino collection."

"I decided to buy the Italian Blu-ray of Witness due to the UK release being canceled, Harrison Ford in one of his best roles outside of Indiana Jones and Star Wars. I also decided to get the Australian release of The fugitive and it's sequel U.S Marshals, great 90s blockbuster films, the 20th anniversary edition of the fugitive looks great."

"80s classics, Bachelor Party stars a young Tom Hanks who is getting married and goes on a wild Bachelor Party which soon goes out of control. Revenge of the nerds is a great film, often parodied in Family Guy and American Dad it is a tale of nerds vs. jocks. Porky's is well, I don't think it needs to be explained.  Crocodile Dundee and it's sequel arrived this week on Blu-ray for the first time, not impressed with the picture quality though it is better than the DVD."

"The Wolf of Wall street was a fun film, I loved it. Scorsese is back on form, the best film he has done since the departed in my opinion. Red 2 is a blind buy and I have heard mixed things about it but I had to give it a go after seeing the first film."

"Now onto the last batch of films, three cult films. Two from the label Scream Factory and one from Code Red. Night of the comet released by Scream Factory is a great film, watch the trailer to get the feel of what you are going to see, you are either going to love it or hate it. The other two are forgotten 80s slashers, Final exam released by Scream Factory is a slow moving slasher film. A lot of people hate it but it has a great atmosphere and the tension slowly builds through each scene before each kill. The final film is from Code Red and it is Nail Gun Massacre, the it's so bad it's good sort of film. The killers puns, the voice and acting is enough to check this film out, hilarious!"

The Beverly Hills Cop Series: Beverly Hills Cop III

"An embarrassment to the series which leaves the original formula for something new and fails miserably. Axel Foley is now in an amusement park..."

Plot;

While Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) and his men attack a chop shop in Detroit he witnesses his inspector get shot dead. Axel then finds out that the man that rented one of the cars had been on vacation at wonder world. Axel then goes back to Beverly Hills to investigate where he meets his good friend Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold). He tells Axel that John Taggart has retired from the force and is now promoted to a higher position in the department.

Axel then goes to Wonder World which is owned by uncle Dave. When Axel gets spotted by security a shootout begins, he is then taken to the head of security Ellis Dewald, Axel recognizes him as his inspector's killer. Billy doesn't believe Axel that Ellis is a killer because he is so involved with the LAPD. Ellis is in fact using Wonder World as a front so that he can counterfeit money, he was at the chop shop to buy blank printing paper to counterfeit with.

Uncle Dave is then shot by Ellis and he blames Axel for it. Axel gets help from Billy to prove his innocence by going into the theme park. A shootout happens and ends with Ellis dying with his henchmen. Uncle Dave then awards Axel with a new character in his name, Axel Fox.

Extras;

Just like Beverly Hills Cop II, Paramount has not ported any of the extras over from the DVD releases.

0/5

Picture Quality;

The picture quality is great, a nice layer of grain and colours are strong. A lot of detail which was not in the DVD release is now shown. A great upgrade.

4/5

Audio Quality;

The DTS 5.1 HD audio track is clear and has plenty of bass. The music comes through clearly and dialogue is never muffled.

4/5

The Blu-ray release is very good maybe too good for this film. For the small amount of fans out there for this film, it is worth a purchase. The film is an outcast of the series and a mere shadow of it's former self. Most of the characters have seemingly disappeared and replaced with less interesting ones. The main setting is ridiculous and is literally one big joke. It's so sad to see what John Landis has done to the series and the majority of the fans and Murphy himself have distanced themselves away from this sequel.

Not recommended!

The Beverly Hills Cop series: Beverly Hills Cop II

"An above average sequel starring the main cast and under the direction of action legend director Tony Scott, this is a must see."

Plot;

In Beverly Hills Captain Andrew Bogomil (Ronny Cox) Detective Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Sergeant John Taggart (John Ashton) are trying to solve the alphabet crimes, the crimes are mostly robberies which leave behind a letter from the alphabet. There is now a new police chief named Harold Lutz he has a bad attitude towards the members of the police department. When he hears that Billy called in the FBI to solve the case he Suspends Andrew due to Billy being one of his men.

Chief Lutz then demotes Billy and John to traffic duty, while Andrew is on his way home he is shot and badly injured by Karla Fry. She is the main henchman to Maxwell Dent. When Axel finds out about Andrew being shot he drops his current case and goes straight to Beverly Hills, Billy and John agree to help Axel in anyway they can.

Goodbye Andrew...

Foley soon finds that the robberies have a connection with Maxwell Dent, he visits a gun club to find that the customized bullets used in the robbery are also used in the gun club owned by Dent. Axel Foley asks for the help of Andrew's daughter as she is an insurance agent, Axel tells her to look up Dent's financial dealings. They find out that Maxwell Dent is robbing his own businesses so that he can finance firearms transactions with an arms dealer. Andrew was shot because he was too close to finding out about the truth.

After Foley foiled a robbery attempt at a bank depot, he tricks Dent's accountant Sidney Bernstein into using his computer and discovers that Dent and Karla are planning to leave the country. Foley then finds out from Andrew's daughter that all of Dent's businesses have had their insurance coverage canceled and are about to go bankrupt except his race track, Axel now thinks that this is his next hit. They arrive too late to stop the robbery and the body of Cain is found in the vault. Lutz then announces to the press that the alphabet crimes have been solved, Foley then notices red mud on the ground.

How about I put something in that hand...

This then leads Axel, Billy and John to the oilfields that Maxwell owns, this is where Dent is doing his arms deal. A shootout takes place, Axel goes further into the warehouse where Dent bursts out of nowhere in a car, Axel shoots him and the car crashes through the wall and explodes. When the surviving thugs try to run away the cops arrive, Lutz then tries to fire all three of them. The mayor then tells Lutz he is fired because of his attitude towards his men. The Mayor then promotes Andrew to chief, Axel then returns to Detroit after inspector Todd found out what happened in Beverly Hills he tells Axel to get on the first plane over the phone.

Extras;

Nothing, all the extras seen on the DVD are now gone.

0/5

Picture Quality;

The transfer is taken from a dated source which shows heavy grain most of the time but has some great detail in some shots. It is a great upgrade from the DVD and better than most of paramount's other catalog titles.

3.5/5

Audio Quality;

The 5.1 DTS HD master audio is very clear and the biggest improvement over other releases is the music. the music is now clear and the dialogue can be easily heard.

4/5

Overall it may not be as comedic as the first film but it has a lot of funny moments and some great action scenes. The main cast returns on form and the film seems more polished likely due to it's $20 million budget. A sequel worth watching and the best to date, Murphy is on fire in this one.

Thursday UPDATE

"Today I have received an Australian horror film and a forgotten action film from the 90s."

"Wolf Creek is one of those films you either like or hate, it has a lot of padding in the first hour but in the 40 minutes after that, things start to kick off. It states that these are based on true events, this may be very loosely or none at all like the Texas chainsaw massacre for the shock value. I recommended it to horror fans that are into the slasher genre, recently Wolf Creek 2 was released."

"The Perfect Weapon is a great action film with spectacular martial arts from it's star, Jeff Speakman. You are likely wondering who is Jeff Speakman? Well he is an international Kenpo master that could have been famous if it weren't for his choice of films after this one. Jeff Speakman has more screen presence than Steven Seagal, so I am more than a little baffled that his career didn't take off. Still we are left with this great film and with quite a few familiar faces like for example Mako who appeared in the Conan films. The only film to date to show off Kenpo and this film pulled it off better than Seagal's film Above the Law which showcased Aikido. Highly recommended to action fans."

Andrew

The Beverly Hills Cop Series: Beverly Hills Cop

"A classic from the 80s which made Eddie Murphy a star, the music, the action and the jokes make this film an 80s action comedy classic."

Plot;

In the opening scene we see detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) undercover trying to deal in cigarettes, but when two police officers ask what is happening it results in a high speed chase ending up with many vehicles bing damaged. Foley's inspector (Gil Hill) warns him that if he continues this sort of behaviour he will fire him. Axel then returns home to his apartment to find someone has broken in, it is his friend Michael Tandino (James Russo). Micheal has done his time in prison and he tells Axel he is now working as a security guard in Beverly Hills. Michael then shows Axel some German bearer bonds but Foeley doesn't want to know anything about them. After a trip to the bar they return to Axel's place where two men appear and knock out Axel. They two men find out that Michale took the bearer bonds from his boss Victor Maitland (Steven Berkoff), they beat Michael up and then shoot him.

Hey man, i'm from Buffalo!

Axel wants to go to Beverly Hills to investigate the murder of his friend but Inspector Todd does not want him to go. Axel decides to use his vacation time to go to Beverly hills to investigate. He finds his friend Jenny (Lisa Eilbacher) working in an art gallery and he finds out that he had ties to Victor Maitland. Axel pretends to be a Flower delivery man to gain access to Maitland's office. He tries to question Victor on the murder of Michael but is taken downstairs and thrown through a glass window by his bodyguards. He is then arrested, at the police station he meets police officers Sergeant John Taggart, Detective Billy Rosewood, and Lieutenant Andrew Bogomil. Lt. Andrew teels Jon and Billy to follow Axel, they get into a few encounters including stopping an armed robbery at a stripclub, they become friends.

Axel trying to find Michael's killers he goes to a warehouse where he finds coffee which is used to hide the scent of the drugs underneath. He also finds out that his boxes do not go into customs to get searched. Foley goes to the country club where Victor is and gets into a fight with one of his bodyguards he is then arrested again. Lt. Andrew wants to know why Axel keeps bothering Victor, he tells them that Victor is a smuggler but he is still unsure what he is smuggling. Andrew believes his story but cannot do a search because of lack of hard evidence. The chief then arrives and demands Axel to be taken out of Beverly Hills by escort.

Herpes simplex 10.

Axel persuades Billy to pick up Jenny and to go the one of Victor's warehouses. Victor arrives when Axel and Jenny are in the warehouse, Victor takes Jenny and tells his thugs to kill Axel. Billy then goes into the warehouse and rescues Axel. Taggart then finds Axel and Billy in Victor's estate, Taggart then joins them to find Jenny and bring Victor to justice. Lt. Andrew finds out that shots were fired at the Maitland estate he sends in back up and goes to the mansion. After a gun battle with Victor's men Axel kills the man that killed Michael. Victor then shoots Axel and injures him, he uses Jenny as a human shield. Lt. Andrew arrives and distracts Victor long along for Jenny to run away, both Andrew and Axel fire into Maitland until he is dead.

The chief arrives and asks Andrew what has happened, Andrew lies to cover Axel and his team. They back up the story, Axel asks Andrew to speak to inspector Todd so that he can't get fired. Taggart and Rosewood meet Axel when checks out of his hotel and they pay his bill. Axel then asks them if they want to get a drink on the way there, they both accept.

 Alternate poster.

Extras;

The DVD extras are ported over which contained a director's commentary, 3 featurette's and a trailer. All are go into much detail, it's a shame though that Eddie Murphy is not in any of the extras.

4/5

Picture Quality;

Unfortunately it is a mixed bag, some scenes look great with a nice amount of grain and others look completely devoid of detail due to digital scrubbing. The upside is you will find it is a major upgrade from the DVD so fans should be happy with this release.

Audio Quality;

5.1 DTS HD audio sounds great, the music and dialogue is crystal clear. The Harold Faltermeyer theme sounds great throughout.

4/5

Overall the film stands the test of time, the story and the characters will keep you hooked until the film ends. The soundtrack may not hold up as well but the theme is a classic. A top performance from Eddie in was one of his best comedic roles. A must see for people who are into 80s action/comedy films.

Highly Recommended!

Monday UPDATE

"No movie review today, a Harrison Ford action classic and Tom Hanks' latest critically acclaimed film on Blu-ray."

"Air force one was one of the biggest action films of the 90s and it could have only been made in the 90s. Harrison ford stars as the president of the united states. Air Force One gets taken by Russian terrorists and the president must save his family and the passengers on board. Basically it is Die Hard on a plane. It is a great action film and rivals the best, the score by Jerry Goldsmith is fantastic too. It's definitely worth a watch."

"Tom Hanks is Captain Phillips, he must command a container shipment going to Africa. On the way there though he and his crew are met by Somali pirates where they take hold of the shipment and want money. Captain Phillips plays games with them and ends up being held hostage by the Somali pirates for ransom. Based on a true story (though I don't know how much of it is actually true) Tom Hanks gives one of his best performances and definitely deserved the Oscar nomination."

"A review will be up on Wednesday."

The Terminator Series: Terminator 3: Rise of the machines

"The first film in the series not to have James Cameron in the directors chair. A hugely disappointing sequel that doesn't live up to the last two films and is goofy, most of the time."

Plot;

John Connor has been living off the grid since his mother Sarah Connor died of leukemia. Judgment day was prevented and never happened in 1997, John (Nick Stahl) still believes it will happen at a later date. Skynet could not find John Connor in the past so it sends a T-X to kill all of the resistance soldiers, the T-X (Kristanna Loken) is a standard machine underneath but has liquid metal as skin and has the ability to fire weapons from it's hands. The resistance in the future reprogram a terminator (Schwarzenegger) and send it back in time to protect Katherine Brewster (Claire Danes) and John Connor.

Your clothes give them to me, now.

The T-X finds out where Katherine and John is and finds them in an animal hospital. The T-X goes to kill them but the terminator shows up to protect them, they drive off while the T-X takes control of cars and a crane.  The Terminator climbs onto the crane where the T-X starts to ram the crane into buildings damaging the terminator, eventually they get away. The Terminator takes them to a mausoleum where Sarah Connor is, The Terminator breaks open the vault and a stack of weapons appear. Sarah hid these weapons in case judgement day happened. The T-X and the police arrive at the scene, the terminator starts a gun battle and they drive off in a hearse.

0.0 causalities

The Terminator must drive to Mexico to escape the fallout when judgement day happens. The Terminator tells them that judgement day will happen at exactly 6:18pm on that day, Kate commands the terminator to take them to see her father because he knows where Skynet is. The Terminator later admits to killing John before he was reprogrammed and Katherine sent him back in time. At the base where Katherine's father is, the president wants them to activate Skynet because of a major computer virus spreading through the system. The Terminator, John and Katherine arrive but it is too late and Skynet is put online. The machines go online and start to kill, Katerine's father gets shot and dies but before he dies he gives John a codebook and the location of Skynet's system core.

John and Kate go to get an airplane so that they can reach Crystal Peak which is a military base located in the mountains that cannot be destroyed by a nuclear attack. The T-X and the terminator start to fight, the T-X reprograms the terminator to kill John and Katherine. John pleads the terminator to stop and the terminator shuts itself down. The T-X gets attracted to a magnetic field and is trapped.

John and Kate arrive at Crystal Peak and start to input the codes to open the doors but the T-X shows up in a helicopter. Moments later the terminator crashes it's helicopter into the T-X cutting it in half. The T-X attempts to kill John and Sarah but the terminator grabs hold of it and keeps the bunker open until they get through. The terminator then uses it's nuclear power cell to kill itself and the T-X. John and Kate then realize that crystal peak is in fact a nuclear fallout shelter and Skynet has no core.

i'm back!

Judgment Day begins and he then realizes that it could not be avoided but only postponed.

Extras;

The UK blu-ray release has a director and cast commentary, storyboards, a documentary, some featurettes, a deleted scene and a blooper reel. A nice set of extras and should please fans of the film.

5/5

Picture Quality;

The picture quality of this release is nothing short of amazing, great detail and nice colours which are never too overpowering. As with most Sony titles no digital tinkering has been applied.

4.5/5

Audio Quality;

The 5.1 TrueHD track is nothing short of amazing, you can hear everything so clearly. The terminator soundtrack to the dialogue and sound effects being crystal clear.

5/5

The film is 50/50. It was the highest budgeted film of it's time and really shows how good the special effects and CGI was. It has some spectacular action scenes for example the crane scene. There is also the constant goofiness in the film from the start when the terminator arrives in the bar to the talk to the hand joke in the petrol station. The film is in no way the perfect sequel but it is watchable, the terminator series was finished when T2 was released as the story was told but this is a popcorn film and is to be enjoyed.

"A forgotten Stallone film arrives, maybe best left forgotten..."

"This film was shot in 1999 but was shelved for 3 years until it was released in 2002. Now yes there are far worse Hollywood films that get released easily but Universal must have been ashamed to have spent 55 million on this. 35 million of that was Stallone's salary. It is a generic slow moving slasher film with a great cast that is wasted. This was at the low point of Stallone's career between Cop Land and Rocky he would star in more mediocre films. I bought this on Ebay brand new for £3.00, it was a good deal to finish my Stallone collection on Blu-ray."

The Terminator Series: Terminator 2: Judgement Day

"Hailed by many critics as being one of the best sequels ever made, this film cemented Schwarzenegger's career in stone as being the number one action hero of his era."

Plot;

The year is 1995 and John Connor (Edward Furlong)is now 10 years old. He is living with his foster parents now due to his mother being in a mental hospital after attempting to blow up a computer factory. We see the terminator (Schwarzenegger) arrive outside a biker bar where he takes the clothes from a biker and takes his bike. He then drives off in search for John Connor. Then another flash of lightening is seen and another person appears, he knocks out a police officer who investigates and takes his clothes and drives off in the police cruiser.

Bad to the bone.

The unknown person wearing the police uniform goes to John Connor's foster parents to ask where John is. The foster parents say he is at the shopping mall with his friend, he then takes a picture of John and walks away. The Terminator is now at the mall looking for John. The unknown man in the police uniform then asks John's friend if he has seen him, his friend lies. John runs off and the man gives chase, when suddenly John stops in his tracks when he sees the terminator. The Terminator tells him to get down and he opens fire on the man, we then realize the man in the uniform is not human but is also a terminator. He grabs John and he runs away. The other terminator gives chase to John, The Terminator grabs John and puts him on his bike just as the other terminator goes to ram him.

Get Down...

The Terminator explains to John that he is here to protect him, he also goes onto explain about the other terminator which is the T-1000 and has been sent back in time to kill John. The Terminator explains that the T-1000 is made of liquid metal and can turn itself into anything it touches except for bombs and guns. John fearing that the T-1000 will kill and copy Sarah (Linda Hamilton) they go to the Mental hospital to break her out. They bump into Sarah trying to escape after she hurts Dr. Silberman and some of his staff. They all escape in a car from the T-1000. The Terminator tells John and Sarah that Skynet will make a nuclear war on Judgment Day and will create the machines. Sarah then learns that the main person involved in creating the terminator is a man named Miles Dyson, he is currently engineering the microprocessor that runs the terminator.

Come with me if you want to live...

They go to Sarah's old friend to gather weapons and flee to Mexico but when Sarah has a terrible dream about the nuclear explosion she wakes up and decides to go kill Dyson to stop Judgment Day. She shoots up his home and wounds him but she then realizes she can't kill him in front of his family she breaks down into tears. The Terminator and John arrive at the home and tell Dyson all about the consequences of his work. Dyson then tells them that they have been working on the damaged CPU and right arm of the terminator as research. They convince him that these items need to be destroyed, they then break into Cyberdyne and get the arm and chip. The police then arrive and shoot Dyson, he decides to stay behind and triggers the explosives in the lab.

I'll be back...

The T-1000 then tracks them down and corners them in a steel mill. The T-1000 battles the terminator until the T-1000 rams a steel pole into the the terminator forcing it to shutdown. Then suddenly the terminator appears back online due to having a emergency back up power supply. The Terminator then comes out of nowhere to fire a grenade launcher into the T-1000 exploding it out of shape, it falls into the molten steel and gets destroyed. The Terminator tells John to throw the chip and arm into the molten steel. The Terminator then tells Sarah that it must be terminated also and she must lower it into the molten steel. John cries while the terminator is lowered into the steel, it gives the thumbs up to John. Sarah and John are relieved that the ordeal is over.

Extras;

This release I own is the 2006 US Lionsgate release only offers two commentary tracks. The first track is a James Cameron and one of the writers of the film and the other is a huge 25 cast members commentary which is a very good listen.

2/5

Picture Quality;

I opted to own this release after seeing how bad the skynet edition looked. This release may have a more natural look to it but most of the time it seems flat. The transfer is definitely old and this film deserves a better release, hopefully since the first terminator film got a 4K remaster we will see this get it's ultimate release.

2.5/5

Audio Quality

The audio quality surprisingly on this disc is not lossless. So it is not great, the dialogue is clear but there is some instances of hissing.

2/5

Overall there hasn't been a great release yet of T2 on Blu-ray. All releases have fallen short one way or the other. I am now hoping since Terminator: Genesis is being released next year we may see another re release of T2 and hopefully a James Cameron approved remaster. The film seems as if it were filmed yesterday, the special effects have aged well and the film never gets boring. Definitely a sequel worth watching and on the same level as the first film.

Highly Recommend!
